Rezūm™ Explained Simply
Core principles of how natural water vapor alleviates urinary symptoms.
01
WHAT IT IS
Water Vapor Therapy
Rezūm uses the natural thermal energy stored in sterile water vapor (steam) to treat enlarged obstructive prostate cells without surgical scalpel incisions.
02
WHY IT WORKS
Targeted Cellular Resorption
Steam distributes only through cell boundaries within the targeted adenoma, denaturing excess tissue that creates urethral constriction and bladder neck strain.
03
HOW IT'S DELIVERED
9-Second Micro-Treatments
Delivered transurethrally in quick, precise 9-second thermal vapor bursts. The entire procedure generally concludes within 10 to 15 minutes.
What Is an Enlarged Prostate (BPH)?
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located just below the bladder in men. As men age, it naturally expands—a non-cancerous condition known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
Because the urethra (the urine channel) passes straight through the center of the prostate, an enlarged gland pinches and constricts the flow. Over time, the bladder must exert greater pressure, leading to muscle thickening, daytime frequency, hesitancy, and interrupted nighttime sleep.
Important Distinction: BPH is benign and does not transform into prostate cancer; however, it severely affects day-to-day comfort, sleep hygiene, and long-term bladder health if unaddressed.

Could Your Symptoms Be Related to an Enlarged Prostate?
Urinary disruptions often develop gradually. Men frequently dismiss these early warnings until sleep patterns and daily routines are compromised.
Weak Urine Stream
Flow has diminished in force, sprays, or feels prolonged compared to earlier years.
Hesitancy in Urination
Difficulty initiating the stream immediately upon reaching the restroom.
Daytime Frequency
Needing to void every 1 to 2 hours, disrupting work, meetings, and travel.
Night-Time Urination (Nocturia)
Waking up two or more times each night to urinate, causing persistent fatigue.
Sudden Urinary Urgency
An abrupt, intense urge to void that is difficult to defer or postpone safely.
Incomplete Emptying
A lingering sensation that the bladder has not fully emptied after voiding.
How Does Rezūm™ Work?
Harnessing convective thermodynamic principles to condense vapor into cellular water, naturally dissolving benign prostatic tissue over subsequent weeks.
Steam Generated
A specialized radiofrequency generator heats sterile water into convective vapor energy, calibrated to body pressure for rapid targeted release.
Steam Generated
Through a slender cystoscopic delivery device, steam is infused directly into targeted obstructive adenoma tissue for 9 seconds per treatment zone.
03
Steam Generated
Treated prostate cells naturally denature and are gradually resorbed by the body over subsequent weeks, opening the urethral channel permanently.
What to Expect Around the Procedure
Clear, transparent expectations from pre-procedural assessment through long-term recovery.
STAGE 01
Before Treatment
- Full urological evaluation & IPSS evaluation
- Uroflowmetry flow test & PVR ultrasound
- Prostate size & PSA screening verification
STAGE 02
Procedure Day
- Conducted under light sedation or local anesthesia
- Takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes
- Discharge home on the same day after observation
STAGE 03
Early Recovery
- Temporary catheter placed for 3 to 7 days
- Guards against temporary tissue inflammation
- Normal non-strenuous routines resumed rapidly
STAGE 04
Follow-Up Relief
- Noticeable improvement in urinary stream by 2–4 wks
- Optimal flow and nocturnal relief at 3 months
- Repeat uroflowmetry check-up with Dr. Chipde
Who May Be a Candidate for Rezūm™?
A balanced clinical perspective ensuring high patient safety and predictable procedural outcomes.
May Be Considered
- Men diagnosed with symptomatic benign prostatic enlargement (IPSS ≥ 13).
- Prostate volumes generally between 30cc and 80cc (including median lobe involvement).
- Patients unsatisfied with long-term medication side effects (dizziness, fatigue, retrograde ejaculation).
- Men prioritizing the preservation of erectile and ejaculatory sexual functions.
- Candidates seeking a minimally invasive day-care procedure rather than hospital surgery.
Requires Individual Assessment
- Very large prostates exceeding 80–100cc (may be better candidates for HoLEP or Robotic Simple Prostatectomy).
- Active urinary tract infection (must be fully cleared before any instrumentation).
- Prostate cancer diagnosis or elevated PSA without prior clinical clearance.
- Prior surgical prostate modifications require rigorous cystoscopic assessment.
- Patients with neurogenic bladder or decompensated bladder musculature.
Rezūm™ Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers to questions prospective patients ask about water vapor therapy.
How long does the Rezūm procedure take?
The actual steam delivery process typically takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Each vapor injection is administered for only 9 seconds. The total clinic visit including preparation, check-in, and recovery room relaxation generally lasts roughly two hours.
Is overnight hospitalization required?
No. Rezūm is performed comfortably as a day-care procedure under oral sedation or local prostatic block at Rajshree Apollo Hospitals. Patients are safely discharged home on the same afternoon.
Why is a temporary catheter needed after treatment?
When water vapor heats the target tissue, brief localized swelling (edema) occurs before cell resorption begins. A small temporary urinary catheter protects the bladder and avoids acute urinary retention. It is typically removed comfortably within 3 to 7 days.
Does Rezūm affect erectile or ejaculatory function?
Clinical multicenter studies have demonstrated that Rezūm preserves erectile and ejaculatory functions in the vast majority of patients. Unlike standard TURP surgery, vapor remains contained within natural tissue boundaries, sparing delicate cavernous nerve bundles and internal sphincter structures.
How soon will I notice improvement in urination?
Initial symptom reduction typically manifests around 2 to 3 weeks after catheter removal as the body reabsorbs treated tissue. Continuing improvements in stream force and nocturnal sleep quality progress steadily over 3 to 6 months.
Can Rezūm treat an enlarged central or median lobe?
Yes. A key advantage of Rezūm over other minimally invasive options (such as UroLift) is its proven versatility in treating protruding median lobes, which cause significant 'ball-valve' bladder obstruction.
Can I stop taking daily BPH medications after Rezūm?
Many patients successfully taper and discontinue alpha-blockers (such as Tamsulosin or Silodosin) and 5-ARIs under Dr. Chipde’s supervision once post-treatment flow stabilizes, freeing them from chronic prescription regimens and medication side effects.
How long do the results of Rezūm last?
Published 5-year clinical trial data demonstrates sustained urinary symptom improvements, low surgical re-treatment rates (~4.4%), and lasting quality of life enhancement over multi-year longitudinal follow-ups.
